Interested in raising chickens for 4-H? Join the 4-H Broiler Project!
Raising young meat-type chickens (broilers) is one of the most interesting and fun-filled activities a 4-H’er can experience. Even though the 4-H Broiler Project is one of the most competitive projects among parish and state poultry contests, more and more Terrebonne Parish youth are discovering how easy it is – while learning the meaning of responsibility – the backbone of the 4-H program.
The project lasts for only 42 days. The chicks will arrive in January with the birds being ready for contests and market in February. The chicks are brought to Houma at one day of age.Once you have the chicks, all that is needed is space, feed, water, and care.Other expenses include feed, housing, and other equipment (heating and lighting).Broiler project order forms will be distributed at the October club meetings, or you can email Mr. Reed [email protected].The deadline to order broilers is November 30, 2026.
Information about the Broiler Project and workshop dates will be given to those 4-H members who order 4-H chicks.
Communication: A Key Life Skill
Communication is one of the most important life skills 4-H members can develop. Throughout this year’s club meetings, members will participate in activities and lessons designed to strengthen their communication skills, including public speaking, active listening, teamwork, and expressing ideas with confidence. Strong communication skills help youth become effective leaders, build positive relationships, and succeed in school, careers, and their communities.
Our communication focus for October is Active Listening. Members will learn how to be attentive listeners, show respect for others' ideas, follow directions, and engage in meaningful conversations. By practicing active listening skills, youth can become better communicators, teammates, and leaders both in 4-H and beyond.

In 4-H, the “H” for Hands represents a commitment to using our hands for larger service by helping others and strengthening our communities. Service is an important part of the 4-H experience, providing members with opportunities to take action, show compassion, and make a positive impact. Through service projects, 4-H members develop leadership skills, learn responsibility, and discover the value of giving back to others.
Throughout the year, we encourage our members to participate in a variety of service projects. Some will be traditional 4-H service activities, such as donating pumpkins and creating Christmas cards, while others will focus on supporting specific groups, organizations, or community needs.
For the month of October, we are encouraging 4-H members and their families to create Kindness Kits. School clubs may choose to complete this project together as a club, or members may participate individually, with family members, or as part of a friend group. Completed kits can be delivered directly by participants or brought to the 4-H office, and we will ensure they are distributed.
Kindness Kits:
Choose a local organization, facility, or community group that you would like to support. Gather donated supplies by collecting items from family members, friends, neighbors, or purchasing items yourself. As you assemble your Kindness Kit, be sure to include a handwritten note. A personal message can be just as meaningful as the donated items and helps develop empathy, compassion, and a spirit of service. Once your kit is complete, you and your family may personally deliver it to the organization you selected, or you may bring it to the 4-H office and we will deliver it on your behalf. If you need assistance identifying a recipient organization or arranging delivery, please contact the 4-H office.
Members assemble small bags containing:
•Encouraging note
•Candy or snack
•Small toy or stress ball
Below are just a few examples of groups that may benefit from Kindness Kits. We encourage clubs/members to identify needs within their own communities and choose a group that is meaningful to them.

• Word searches or puzzle books
• Pens and notepads
• Lip balm
• Sugar-free candy
