On August 17, 2026, the LSU AgCenter's Audubon Sugar Institute (ASI) delivered a customized training program on sugar production for staff at the West Baton Rouge Museum. The training was developed in response to the museum's interest in expanding staff knowledge of sugar manufacturing and strengthening educational programs related to Louisiana's sugar industry.

The four-hour course was presented by Dr. Gillian Eggleston and Alexa Triplett and was tailored specifically for museum personnel. The program provided an overview of how raw sugar is produced from sugarcane, covering the major processing steps and the scientific principles behind them.

Museum staff requested the training to help answer technical questions frequently received from visitors during tours and to support the development of educational activities and STEAM programming related to the state's sugar industry.

Topics covered included:

  • Sugarcane processing and sugar production
  • Key factory operations and terminology
  • The science behind sugar manufacturing
  • Historical and modern aspects of the sugar industry
