The LSU AgCenter's Audubon Sugar Institute (ASI) has received approval for all equipment requested through a one-time allocation of Louisiana State funds totaling more than $230,000. The funding was provided by the Louisiana Legislature during its 2026 session and will support significant enhancements to ASI's research, analytical, and technical service capabilities.

The approved equipment includes:

  • Advanced digital microscope for crystal size and crystal size distribution measurements
  • Mini vacuum pan for laboratory-scale crystallization research and process development
  • Molecular biology equipment to support microbial research
  • Ion chromatography system for organic acid analysis

These new resources will strengthen ASI's ability to conduct applied research, develop innovative solutions for sugar factory challenges, and provide advanced analytical services to the Louisiana sugar industry.

The advanced microscope and mini vacuum pan will enhance research related to sugar crystallization and crystal quality, while the molecular biology equipment and ion chromatography system will expand capabilities in microbial investigations and factory process diagnostics.

ASI sincerely thanks the Louisiana Legislature and Dr. Michael Salassi for their continued support of agricultural research and the Louisiana sugar industry. This investment will significantly enhance Audubon's analytical and research capabilities while expanding the technical services available to sugar factories throughout the state.
